Why do clubs pay millions for an 18-year-old?

A young player is not just a player: he is also an asset whose value can grow for years.
The question comes up regularly: how can a barely adult footballer with few senior appearances be worth tens of millions?
The accounting logic
A club spreads a transfer fee across the years of the contract, while income from selling a player appears immediately and in full. An 18-year-old signed on a long deal therefore represents a few million a year in the books, whereas selling him produces a lump-sum profit.
Time as an asset
With a young player a club is not buying current performance but the possibility of development. Time is both risk and opportunity here: if he succeeds, he can be sold for a multiple of the fee; if not, the loss is limited because the initial price was lower too.
The effect of competition
Ten to fifteen European clubs now compete for the best teenagers, and ever earlier. Competition drives prices up and has produced structures such as sell-on clauses, which let the developing club share in later profits.
What about those who do not make it?
Most will not become stars. In well-functioning systems that is not a tragedy: loans, lower divisions and second-tier leagues provide a stage, and many find their level at 22 to 24. From the club's point of view, one success covers the cost of ten mistakes.
