Brian Madjo became the youngest scorer in Super Cup history at 17 years and 212 days, taking the record from Patrick Kluivert.
Many supporters are hearing Brian Madjo's name for the first time. Aston Villa's 17-year-old forward scored against Paris Saint-Germain in the European Super Cup and made history in the process.
A record against PSG
Madjo was given his chance in the Super Cup match against PSG and took it immediately, scoring Aston Villa's equaliser in the 45th minute. PSG eventually won 2-1, but the night remained unforgettable for the striker. At 17 years and 212 days he became the youngest scorer in the competition's history, taking the record from Patrick Kluivert, who was 19 years and 220 days old when he found the net.
So who is Brian Madjo?
Brian Djomeni Madjo was born in London on 12 January 2009 to Cameroonian parents. His father, Guy Madjo, was also a professional footballer. The 193 cm forward moved to Luxembourg with his family at a young age and started his career there, playing in the youth systems of Marisca Mersch and Racing Union before joining FC Metz's academy in 2023. He developed so quickly in France that he made his Ligue 1 debut at 16.
Aston Villa may have paid €12 million
The Premier League took notice, and Aston Villa signed him from Metz in January, with reports suggesting the fee could reach €12 million once various conditions are met. His debut was delayed by an unusual legal issue: FIFA refused to register him because it treated the deal as an international transfer, and Madjo was not yet 18. Aston Villa disagreed, arguing among other things that the player was born in London. The club took the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and on 4 August secured clearance for him to play. Eight days later he was scoring against PSG.
An international at 16
Madjo's international story is unusual too. He represented Luxembourg at youth level and even played three times for the senior national team at just 16, before switching allegiance. He now plays for England's under-17 side and has already scored for them.
Compared to Lukaku
At 193 cm Madjo is used mainly as a centre-forward. He is physically advanced for his age but is also considered technically promising. A right-footed forward, his build and playing style have already drawn comparisons with Romelu Lukaku. One goal against PSG does not guarantee a career at the very top, but at 17 he has taken a record from Patrick Kluivert that made all of Europe take notice.
