How a Formula 1 weekend is structured

Sep 10, 2026 · 09:10

Practice, qualifying, race - and on sprint weekends everything changes.

The three days of a Formula 1 Grand Prix follow strict choreography, and the type of weekend determines what happens when.

The traditional weekend

Two practice sessions take place on Friday, a third on Saturday, followed by qualifying. Practice is about set-up: teams try tyres, run long and short stints and gather data.

Qualifying

Qualifying has three segments. The slowest cars are eliminated in the first, more in the second, and the fastest fight for pole position in the third. Qualifying is vital because overtaking is difficult with modern cars: the grid often shapes the outcome of the race in advance.

The sprint weekend

Some weekends use a shortened programme: a single practice session, a separate qualifying session for the sprint, the sprint race itself, then traditional qualifying and the Grand Prix. The sprint is shorter, has no mandatory stop and awards separate points.

What viewers rarely see

Much of a race is decided on the pit wall, where strategists calculate in real time when a stop is worth making, what clean air is worth, and how to react to a safety car. One well-timed pit stop can be worth more than ten laps of wheel-to-wheel racing.
