How the UEFA coefficient works, and why every Hungarian match matters

Aug 19, 2026 · 10:25

The coefficient decides how many clubs a country can enter and which round they join - here is how the points add up.

The international prospects of Hungarian club football are governed by a single number: the country coefficient. It determines how many entrants a nation gets and which qualifying round they start in.

How are points collected?

Clubs earn two points for a win and one for a draw in the main competition. In qualifying and play-off rounds the values are halved: one point for a win, half a point for a draw. Bonuses are added for reaching the league phase and for progressing through the knockout rounds.

The crucial twist: division

The points collected are divided by the number of clubs the country entered. That is why early exits hurt so much: if three of four entrants go out in the summer, the fourth team's points are still divided by four. One good run is not enough - the whole field has to contribute.

A five-year window

The ranking always sums the results of the last five seasons, so the oldest year drops out every summer. An outstanding campaign works for a country for five years - and a poor one drags it down for just as long.

What does a good ranking bring?

A higher place means not only more entrants but better seeding: the champions join later, face easier opponents and are more likely to reach the league phase, which brings further points and significant revenue. It is a cycle that is very hard to break into - and very easy to fall out of.
