How an NBA season is structured: 82 games, the play-in and a long postseason

Aug 27, 2026 · 20:00

Regular season, play-in tournament and then four best-of-seven rounds - the NBA calendar explained.

The NBA season is far longer than European league campaigns, and its structure follows a different logic.

Regular season: 82 games

The thirty teams are split into Eastern and Western Conferences, and within them into divisions. Everyone plays 82 games, meeting conference rivals more often and the other conference less frequently. The schedule is therefore not perfectly balanced: a tougher run can be a real disadvantage in the standings.

The play-in tournament

Not everything is settled when the regular season ends. In each conference the top six qualify automatically for the playoffs, while the teams finishing seventh to tenth contest a play-in tournament for the remaining two places. The winner of the seven-versus-eight game goes straight through, the loser gets a second chance against the winner of the nine-versus-ten game.

The playoffs

Every playoff series runs to four wins, so a maximum of seven games. Winning a title requires four such series, which can mean up to twenty-eight matches - which is why squad depth and staying healthy matter so much.

Why so long?

The long regular season filters out randomness: in a seven-game series the weaker team rarely advances. The physical load is enormous, however, which is why load management - stars deliberately sitting out games - became standard practice. The league responded with rules on how many games a star can miss without consequences.
