Pick and roll: basketball's most important basic action, explained

Two players, one screen - and from there the defence has no good answer.
If one action defines modern basketball, it is the pick and roll.
What actually happens?
A team-mate steps alongside the ball-handler and blocks the defender's path with his body. After the screen the screener either dives towards the basket - the roll - or steps out to the line for a shot, the pop. The defence has to account for two players at once while the remaining attackers reposition.
Why is it so hard to defend?
Because every choice has a price. If both defenders jump to the ball, someone is left open. If the big man drops back towards the rim, the ball-handler gets a free shot. If they switch, a small defender ends up on a big man and vice versa, which the offence can immediately exploit.
The roles
A good pick and roll needs more than the ball-handler: it needs a screener with timing and physicality, plus shooters spacing the floor who punish the defence for packing the paint. That is why having at least three or four players who can shoot has become a basic requirement.
Where else does it appear?
The same action works away from the ball, and there is an inverted version where the small man screens for the big. The principle is always the same: create an advantage by forcing the defence to choose.
