Weight classes and belts: how boxing and MMA are organised

Sep 13, 2026 · 14:05

Several sanctioning bodies, several belts - which is why naming the true champion is so difficult.

Rankings in combat sports look impenetrable at first, but the logic becomes clear once the two worlds are separated.

Boxing: multiple sanctioning bodies

In professional boxing several independent organisations award title belts in the same weight class, which is how four champions can exist at once. A fighter who unifies two belts is a unified champion; one who collects them all is undisputed.

Why not simplify?

Because each organisation has its own rankings, mandatory challengers and sanctioning fees. The interests of promoters and broadcasters complicate matters further, so the biggest fights often take years to arrange.

MMA: organisations, not sanctioning bodies

In MMA the title belongs to a promotion. That organisation decides who gets a title shot, generally based on its rankings and the appeal of the matchmaking. There are therefore no parallel champions in a single weight class.

The weigh-in

Weight classes are strict in both sports: the weigh-in takes place the day before the bout, and missing weight can cost a share of the purse or, in serious cases, the title. Rapid weight cutting and rehydration remain one of the most criticised practices in both sports, not least on health grounds.
