How to read odds: decimal, fractional and American formats explained

Aug 23, 2026 · 11:15

Odds are not tips but priced probabilities - here is how to convert them quickly in your head.

Betting odds look complicated at first, but every format expresses the same thing: what chance the bookmaker gives an outcome, and what it pays if it happens.

The three formats

Decimal (European) odds are the most widely used: 2.50 means that every unit staked returns two and a half units, including the stake. Fractional (British) odds such as 3/2 show the net profit relative to the stake. American odds use plus and minus numbers: +150 means a stake of 100 returns 150 in profit, while -200 means you must stake 200 to win 100.

From odds to probability

The reciprocal of a decimal price gives the implied probability: odds of 4.00 imply 25 percent, while 1.50 implies roughly 67 percent. This is the quickest way to decide whether you agree with the bookmaker.

The margin, or why it never adds up to 100 percent

If you add up the implied probabilities of all three outcomes of a football match, you always get more than 100 percent. The difference is the bookmaker's margin. The lower it is, the better the offer - which is why it is worth checking the same event in several places.

What does a price move mean?

Odds shift in response to betting volume and new information such as injuries, line-ups or weather. The direction of a move is therefore not a "sure tip", it only shows where the market has gone.
