Price tracking: how to know whether to buy now or wait

Aug 23, 2026 · 09:00

A discount tells you what a store wants you to think. Price history tells you what is true.

The single most useful shopping habit is knowing what something usually costs. It takes minutes to set up and changes every decision afterwards.

Set an alert instead of checking manually. Price tracking tools let you set a target and notify you when it is reached. This converts shopping from an activity into a background process: you name your price once, then get on with your life.

Learn the shape of the year. Electronics fall after a new model is announced, not when it ships. Clothing falls at the end of each season, deeply in January and July. Garden furniture is cheapest in autumn, and Christmas decorations on the twenty-seventh of December. Large appliances follow the trade-in cycles of retailers rather than the calendar.

Know when waiting is pointless. Consumables, anything supply-constrained, and popular items in the run-up to Christmas do not fall. Neither does anything with a fixed price set by the manufacturer.

Understand the twenty percent rule of thumb. For most consumer goods, the difference between the average price and the annual low is roughly ten to twenty percent. If you are looking at something twenty percent below its yearly average, you are near the floor and waiting longer rarely pays.

Beware of shrinking to fit a price. When manufacturers hold a headline price, they sometimes reduce the contents instead. Compare price per unit, not price per package, especially for household goods.

And a note on our side of things. Coupon codes work differently from price drops: they appear and vanish quickly, sometimes within days, and they rarely coincide with the annual low. In practice the best moment to buy is when a seasonal price drop and a live code overlap. That is what the weekly best page is for — it collects the codes that are currently deepest, so you can check them against the price you have been tracking.
