There has been another twist in one of the summer's biggest transfer sagas: Real Madrid have made an official offer to RB Leipzig for Yan Diomande, though the German club rejected the first package worth €100 million. Meanwhile PSG, long the favourites, have still failed to reach an agreement with Leipzig, putting the Spanish giants in the driving seat.
Real Madrid's first offer arrives
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid opened official talks between the clubs this week. Madrid's offer consists of a €90 million fixed fee plus €10 million in add-ons, worth €100 million in total. RB Leipzig turned it down, however, as they are holding out for a higher fee for the forward. The two sides remain in contact, though, so the deal is far from dead.
PSG have been working on the deal for months
The French press has been reporting for months that Diomande is one of Paris Saint-Germain's top targets. The Paris club, however, have so far failed to reach an agreement with RB Leipzig, which is why Real Madrid have unexpectedly emerged as a serious rival. Madrid's official offer changes the picture, since they are no longer merely showing interest but have put a concrete figure on the table.
Yan Diomande: Real Madrid or PSG?
Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City have also tried their luck. Real Madrid and PSG are not the only clubs interested in Diomande. In the last ten days Manchester City and Arsenal have also contacted the player's representatives, while Liverpool made earlier enquiries, though the player was not open to a move to the Premier League, meaning none of the English clubs reached the stage of an official bid.
José Mourinho can hardly wait
If Real Madrid ultimately meet RB Leipzig's financial demands, Diomande could become one of the most expensive signings in the club's history this summer. Since José Mourinho's arrival as head coach, Madrid have visibly stepped up their transfer plans and appear ready to pay close to a record fee to land the Leipzig star.
