How an NFL season is built: 18 weeks, playoffs and the Super Bowl

Seventeen games, one bye week and a straight knockout postseason - the NFL has the tightest schedule of the major leagues.
The NFL season is shorter than that of any other major American league, which is exactly why every single game carries enormous weight.
Regular season
The thirty-two teams are split into two conferences, the AFC and the NFC, and into four divisions within each. Everyone plays seventeen games across eighteen weeks, so there is one bye week in the schedule. With a single defeat counting for so much, there is no room for a quiet month.
Playoffs
Seven teams from each conference reach the postseason: four division winners and three wild cards. The team with the best record receives a first-round bye. From there every tie is a single game - there is no seven-game series, and one bad day means elimination.
The Super Bowl
The two conference champions meet in the Super Bowl, always at a pre-selected neutral venue. It is one of the most watched annual sports broadcasts in the world, with the halftime show and the commercials forming an industry of their own.
Why is the league so balanced?
Because most revenue is shared centrally, the salary cap is a hard limit and the draft order favours the weakest teams. That is why a bottom-half side can reach the playoffs within a year or two - sustained dominance is rare in the NFL.
