How to stack savings: coupons, cashback and card offers together

Aug 22, 2026 · 14:00

You can usually combine two of the three. Combining all three needs the right order.

Most people use one discount and stop. The gains from combining are substantial, but the order you do things in decides whether it works.

Start with the payment method, because it is the layer that never conflicts. Card providers and payment apps run their own offers, and these apply regardless of any code you use. Check yours before you shop rather than after.

Next, go through the cashback layer. Cashback sites and browser extensions pay a percentage back for sending you to the store, and this generally stacks with coupon codes. The critical detail is that you must arrive at the store through the cashback link. If you open the store in another tab, or click a different link afterwards, the tracking is lost and so is the cashback.

Then apply the coupon code. This is where conflicts appear. Some stores block cashback when a code is used, some reduce the cashback rate, and some allow both. The cashback site usually states which, in small print on the store's page. When the two conflict, take whichever is larger.

Finally, check whether a gift card would help. Discounted gift cards for large retailers are sold at a few percent below face value, and paying with one is invisible to the store's discount logic, so it stacks with everything.

A worked example. A 100 purchase with a 15 percent code, 4 percent cashback and 2 percent card cashback comes to 85 after the code, minus 3.40 cashback, minus 1.70 from the card: roughly 80. That is 20 percent off, and only one of the three layers came from a coupon site.

Two warnings. Returns claw back cashback but not always the coupon, so a partial return can leave you worse off than expected. And cashback takes weeks or months to confirm, because the store waits out the return window first. Treat it as money arriving later, not money saved now.
