Hard cap and the draft: why money alone cannot buy an NFL title

The NFL salary cap cannot be exceeded - the source of the league's famous parity.
The NFL's economic system rests on one principle: everybody has the same amount of money to spend.
The hard cap
Unlike basketball, there is no luxury tax to pay: the salary cap is a strict ceiling. Teams therefore work with contract structures - signing bonuses spread across several years - to fit the roster under the limit in a given season.
The question of guarantees
A large share of NFL contracts is not guaranteed, meaning a club does not necessarily pay the full amount if it releases a player. This is the most contested issue between players and the league, and it differs sharply from basketball practice.
The draft
The selection order follows the reverse of the standings with no lottery: the weakest team picks first. The draft has seven rounds, and selected players sign contracts on a fixed salary scale, which further helps weaker teams.
The franchise tag
A separate tool allows a club to retain a key player whose contract has expired for one more year, in exchange for a salary tied to the best-paid players at his position. It causes plenty of disputes, but it often prevents a team being dismantled in a single summer.
The result
The system is designed so every fan can start each season with hope. The statistics suggest it works: the NFL has the highest annual turnover of playoff teams among the major leagues.
