Triple-double: what it means, and why it became a benchmark

Sep 5, 2026 · 13:25

Double figures in three statistical categories - a simple definition with a much-debated meaning.

The triple-double may be basketball's best-known statistical concept, yet its meaning is often misunderstood.

The definition

A triple-double occurs when a player reaches at least ten in three different statistical categories in the same game. Typically that means points, rebounds and assists, but it can also involve steals or blocks - which is far rarer.

Why is the quadruple version so rare?

A quadruple-double is almost exceptional because ten steals or ten blocks is an outlier performance in itself, and those categories were not even recorded officially for a long time. As a result, performances from earlier eras are not statistically comparable with today's.

What it does not tell you

A triple-double is not the same as a good performance. One accumulated with many turnovers and poor shooting is worth less than an efficient twenty-point game. The metric measures versatility, not efficiency.

So why did it become a benchmark?

Because it is easy to understand and clearly shows that a player influenced several areas of the game. Modern basketball has also elevated the tall, ball-dominant player who both runs the offence and rebounds - the role that produces the most triple-doubles.
