Sports gear: why end of season beats every sale

Sporting goods follow an unusually rigid cycle, and understanding it turns expensive equipment into merely costly equipment.

Buy winter gear in March, summer gear in September. Ski equipment, snowboards and cold-weather clothing are cleared at the end of the season at reductions that no in-season sale approaches. The same applies in reverse to cycling, watersports and camping equipment. The gear does not change meaningfully year to year, so last season's model is this season's model with a different colourway.

Last year's model is the sweet spot for technical equipment. Running shoes are the clearest example: manufacturers update models annually, often with cosmetic changes, and the previous version drops sharply once the new one lands. If a shoe works for you, buying the outgoing version repeatedly is both cheaper and safer than switching.

Club and team kit is discounted after the season ends, and replica shirts fall hardest when a new design is announced. If you are not attached to the current design, the previous one is frequently half price.

Be careful with fit-critical purchases online. Running shoes, cycling shoes and ski boots vary enough between models that buying unseen is a gamble. Where possible, try the item in a shop and buy the size you know. The saving is not worth an injury.

Protective equipment is the one place not to economise. Helmets, harnesses and safety gear have certification standards and a service life, and heavily discounted stock is sometimes near the end of it. Check the manufacture date.

Watch for club and membership discounts. Many sports federations and clubs negotiate discounts with retailers that beat public codes, and members frequently do not know they exist. If you belong to a club, ask.

And a note on outlet stock: outlet versions of branded goods are sometimes made specifically for outlets, at lower specification than the mainline product. The logo is the same; the fabric may not be.
