Draft and lottery: how the NBA distributes its biggest talents

Aug 28, 2026 · 19:15

Even the weakest team is not guaranteed the first pick - the aim is to remove the incentive to lose on purpose.

The NBA's most important talent event is the draft, where teams select in turn from the players entering the league. The order, however, is not simply the reverse of the standings.

What is the lottery?

The right to the first few picks is decided by a draw among the teams that missed the playoffs. Those with the worst records have the best chance, but the odds were deliberately flattened: the three weakest teams share the same, relatively modest probability.

Why is that necessary?

The system was designed to reduce the value of tanking. If the worst record automatically meant the first pick, every team in a hopeless position would have a reason to give up on the season.

Two rounds and guaranteed contracts

The draft consists of two rounds, with one pick per team in each. First-round selections receive guaranteed contracts based on a fixed salary scale, while second-round picks are in a far less secure position. Draft picks carry independent value: in trades they often serve as currency, sometimes years in advance.

What does it mean for fans?

The draft means even a poor season can have a long-term purpose, which is why the summer is interesting for eliminated teams too. One good pick can define a franchise's direction for five or six years - which is why supporters start tracking the best college players months before the Finals.
