Betting basics: what do value, handicap and over/under mean?

A simple explanation of the most common betting markets and terms, with examples.
Betting menus quickly become overwhelming, yet a handful of basic concepts make most markets readable.
Value: the gap between the price and your estimate
Value means your own estimated probability is higher than the one priced into the odds. If you believe an outcome has a 50 percent chance but the bookmaker offers 2.20 - implying about 45 percent - then in theory there is value. That guarantees nothing: your estimate may be wrong, and in the short run luck decides everything.
Handicap: an artificial head start
A handicap balances the odds. If a team is given a -1 handicap, the bet wins only if it wins by at least two goals. Asian handicaps use half and quarter goal lines, so partial refunds are possible when a match is drawn.
Over/under: the number of goals
Here it does not matter who wins, only how many goals are scored. The 2.5 line is the most popular: "over" wins if at least three goals are scored. Because the line is a half goal, there is no draw outcome.
Accumulators and the trap of big odds
Odds in an accumulator multiply, so potential returns rise dramatically - but the chance of winning falls just as fast. Four selections at 60 percent each combine to roughly a 13 percent chance.
