NBA or FIBA? The most important differences in the rules

Different court, different clock, different three-point line - which is why a Euro tournament looks nothing like an NBA game.
Anyone who watches both the NBA and European basketball quickly senses that they are not the same game. Much of the difference comes down to the rules.
Playing time and quarters
NBA games are four twelve-minute quarters, FIBA games four times ten minutes. Those eight minutes mean more possessions, higher scores and a different rhythm.
The court and the three-point line
The NBA court is longer and wider, and the three-point line is further from the basket, though closer in the corners. This gives the corner three special value in the NBA and creates more space for drives.
Fouls and free throws
The accounting of infractions, the treatment of team fouls and the consequences of technical fouls all differ: under FIBA rules a technical means one free throw and possession, while in the NBA the restart works differently. Individual disqualification differs too: six personal fouls in the NBA, five under FIBA rules.
Defence and the three-second rule
The treatment of zone defence, the defensive three-second rule and the interpretation of goaltending also differ, which makes it harder to pack the paint permanently in the NBA.
Why does it matter?
Because a player who thrives in Europe faces not only new opponents but new rules in the NBA, and vice versa. That is why NBA stars also need an adjustment period at summer international tournaments.
