Who works at a modern football club away from the pitch?

Aug 29, 2026 · 12:05

Sporting director, head of recruitment, data analysts, sports psychologists - an entire organisation now sits behind the bench.

Today a whole professional apparatus stands behind the head coach, one that barely existed in football two or three decades ago.

The sporting director

He is responsible for the club's sporting strategy: which player profiles to target, at what price and on what contract length. He negotiates with other clubs and typically provides continuity through coaching changes - which is why well-run clubs do not start from scratch after every dismissal.

Scouting and data analysis

The scouting network watches players live, while the data team filters databases to reduce tens of thousands of professionals to the few dozen who fit the club's style. The two approaches work together: data narrows the list, human observation decides.

Fitness and medical staff

Load management has become a profession of its own. Training loads are tracked with monitoring vests, recovery is supported with sleep and regeneration data, and injury prevention is a separate programme. A well-run medical department is one of the cheapest "signings" available, because it means fewer minutes lost.

What is most often missing

Continuity. At many clubs every coaching change brings a new playing style, new recruitment principles and a new staff, so previous investment is wasted. Stable clubs differ in one respect: the professional framework outlives the coach.
