Draft, cap and farm teams: how an NHL roster is built

Prospects take years to mature, and the salary cap shapes every decision.
Building an NHL team is a long process: most drafted players become regulars years later.
The draft and the lottery
A lottery among the teams that missed the playoffs decides the top selections, similar to basketball but with less movement. The draft runs over several rounds, and most selected players return to college, junior leagues or Europe to develop.
The entry-level contract
Young players start on capped, multi-year entry-level deals that can include bonuses. This system allows a team that drafts well to acquire quality players cheaply for years.
The farm system
Every NHL club has an affiliate in a lower league where prospects get minutes and from where a replacement can be called up immediately in case of injury. Development therefore happens in competitive games, not just on the practice rink.
The hard cap
The NHL salary cap is strict, so clubs must choose between a few large contracts and a balanced roster. Placing players on injured reserve can bring temporary relief, which makes roster management a tactical exercise in itself.
Why does it matter to fans?
Because it explains why a rebuild can take three or four years, and why clubs sell players before the spring trade deadline who would leave as free agents the following summer anyway.
