The structure of Hungarian ice hockey is both domestic and international: the best clubs compete in several competitions.
Domestic and regional leagues
Alongside the Hungarian top flight there is an international competition featuring clubs from several countries, with Hungarian participation. The strongest sides may also compete in an Austrian-based league, which means higher-quality matches every week.
World championship divisions
The Ice Hockey World Championship is not a single tournament: the best sixteen national teams make up the elite, with divisions below organised into groups of six playing a round robin. The winner of each group is promoted and the bottom side relegated.
Why is the system so brutal?
Because one bad day can set a national team back a year: five matches decide an entire season. These tournaments are therefore far more emotionally charged than a long league campaign.
The question of development
In hockey ice time is decisive: where there are more indoor rinks, more children get regular training. The most important indicator of Hungarian progress is therefore not the senior result but the number of functioning rinks and age-group teams in the country.
