Heats, semi-finals, finals: how a major swimming championship works

Sep 14, 2026 · 09:45

Swimmers may have to race three times in a day - and that programme is part of the challenge.

At major swimming championships it is not enough to swim fast once: the structure of the programme is itself part of the performance.

Three rounds

In shorter events, heats are held in the morning, semi-finals in the evening and finals the following day. Longer distances have no semi-finals: swimmers go straight from the heats to the final. Athletes must therefore balance swimming fast enough to progress without burning themselves out.

Lane allocation

In the final the fastest qualifier gets a central lane, where the water is calmest and the rivals are easiest to see. It is a small but genuine advantage.

Qualifying standards

Entry to major championships is based on qualifying times. There are usually two levels: the stricter one guarantees a place, while the easier one earns a start if spaces remain in the field.

Short course and long course

Fifty-metre and twenty-five-metre pools are separate worlds. The latter has more turns, so times are faster and records are kept separately. That is why a swimmer can be world class in short course yet miss the final in long course.
