Why did the three-pointer become the engine of modern basketball?

The maths is simple - three is more than two - but the consequences reshaped every part of the court.
The biggest change in basketball over the past fifteen years is the rise of the three-point shot, driven by a deliberate, data-led decision.
The arithmetic
A 35 percent three-point shooter produces an average of 1.05 points per attempt, while a 50 percent mid-range shooter produces exactly one. The mid-range jumper therefore became the least efficient shot on the floor, and analysts began squeezing it out of offences.
What followed
The number of three-point attempts soared, attacks now operate in far wider spaces, and shooting ability from big men became a premium skill. A centre who can step out to the line drags his defender away from the basket and opens driving lanes.
The defensive response
Defence changed too: switching schemes became more important, along with long, mobile players able to guard several positions, and closing off corner threes. Many teams deliberately concede the mid-range shot, considering it the cheapest concession.
Is there a counter-movement?
More and more coaches argue that the sheer volume of attempts makes games look alike. That is why rule changes, such as moving the line back, resurface periodically. For now, though, the current formula stands as long as the maths says so.
