FIFA dates: why does club football stop several times a year?

Aug 31, 2026 · 08:10

The international match calendar sets out when clubs must release their players.

Several times a season league programmes are interrupted and players travel to their national teams. Those windows are fixed in the international match calendar.

What does compulsory release mean?

During the periods in the calendar a club must release a player called up by his national team, and receives no separate payment for it - compensation from associations only follows major tournaments. A call-up outside the calendar is not binding, and the club may keep the player.

Why are the matches grouped?

Because long travel places a heavy load on players. If two or three games are played in one window, a single trip is enough and the league is interrupted only once. This matters especially for national teams on other continents.

What clubs dislike

The injury risk and the workload. A South American or African player travels thousands of kilometres after internationals and then plays a league match days later. That is why clubs regularly ask for a redesigned calendar with longer but less frequent windows.

Continental tournaments

Major tournaments are a category of their own: players are away for weeks. Continental competitions held in winter therefore cause serious headaches for European clubs, which lose their best players in mid-season.
