Shock Transfer Twist: Tottenham's World Cup Champion Offered to Inter Milan!
Negotiations between Inter Milan and Tottenham Hotspur are in full swing for Djed Spence, but a massive name has unexpectedly landed on the table. According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the London club has floated the possibility of a move for World Cup-winning defender Cristian Romero to the Italian champions.
Djed Spence Negotiations Brought Them to the Table
The Nerazzurri's primary target for the right wing-back position—following Denzel Dumfries' departure to Real Madrid—is Tottenham's Djed Spence. Inter has been actively discussing terms with the Spurs hierarchy over the last few days.
While negotiations are ongoing, the transfer is currently stalled over the valuation. The London club is reportedly holding out for a fee in the region of €30-35 million, which the Italian giants deem too high. However, Spence is highly receptive to the move, having already tasted life in Serie A during his loan spell at Genoa, meaning the deal remains a priority for Inter.
The Romero Bombshell: Is the World Cup Winner Up for Grabs?
In the midst of the Spence discussions, Tottenham threw a major curveball by offering Cristian Romero to Inter Milan.
The 28-year-old Argentine center-back's future in London has become highly uncertain. Romero is coming off an incredibly difficult Premier League campaign. Plagued by injuries, a flurry of yellow and red cards, and subsequent suspensions, he missed key matches during a season where Tottenham suffered one of the worst campaigns in their modern history, finishing a dismal 17th and only barely avoiding relegation. With a rebuild on the horizon, both the club and player may feel it is time for a fresh start.
High Fee and Wages Present a Massive Hurdle
While Inter is highly intrigued by the prospect of signing the robust, world-class defender, pulling off this deal presents a monumental financial challenge for the Milan-based club:
Transfer Fee: Tottenham is still looking to recoup at least €45-50 million for Romero's signature.
Wage Demands: Romero is one of the top earners in London, pulling in a salary that exceeds £200,000 per week.
Inter's current financial situation makes it impossible to finance a deal of this magnitude immediately. The Italian champions would first need to raise significant capital through high-profile player sales before they could realistically make a move for the Argentine.
Barcelona Waiting in the Wings
Inter is not the only elite club tracking the situation. FC Barcelona is also keeping a very close eye on Romero. While the Catalan giants are currently prioritizing a top-tier striker, they are ready to enter the race if the financial conditions for Romero become more favorable.
The transfer market is heating up, and while Romero's fate likely won't be set in stone until after the World Cup concludes, his days in North London appear to be numbered.
